One Stop BIM Solution
Kotabaru Yogyakarta is one of the city’s most remarkable heritage areas, preserving the charm of colonial architecture and classic urban design amid the modern bustle of the city. Officially designated as a Cultural Heritage Area in 2011, Kotabaru stands as a living testament to the city’s history and urban development.
If you’ve ever strolled through Kotabaru, you’ll notice that it offers a distinct atmosphere unlike any other area in Yogyakarta. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the neighborhood feels calm, organized, and harmonious. Kotabaru was designed based on the “Garden City” concept, inspired by European urban planning that emphasizes green spaces, comfort, and order. Houses feature spacious gardens, wide boulevards, and well-connected arterial roads, creating a refreshing and structured cityscape.
The Origins of Kotabaru
The story of Kotabaru dates back to the 1920s, when European settlements in Yogyakarta were concentrated around Vredeburg Fort and Malioboro Street. As economic activity grew, Cornelis Cane, with the approval of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII, initiated the development of a new residential district east of the Code River.
This new neighborhood was called “Nieuwe Wijk”, or “New District,” which later became known as Kotabaru. From its inception, Kotabaru was envisioned as a modern residential area equipped with advanced infrastructure for its time.
Kotabaru’s buildings are characterized by the Indische architectural style, a blend of European design and tropical adaptation. Key features include spacious yards, high ceilings, open terraces, and large ventilation openings to allow natural airflow in the tropical climate. Interestingly, Kotabaru was the first area in Yogyakarta to have electricity and a centralized water system (PAM).
Many of its historical structures still stand and remain functional today, including: St Antonius Padua Church, Bethesda Hospital, SMPN 5, SMA Bopkri 1, and SMAN 3 Yogyakarta, Museum Sandi, Dinas Pariwisata of Yogyakarta, and Syuhada Mosque. These public facilities reflect how Kotabaru was carefully planned as a complete, modern, and self-sufficient neighborhood.
Preserving Kotabaru through Scan to BIM Technology
As a heritage area, preserving Kotabaru is essential to ensure its cultural and architectural value endures through time. In support of this mission, Geo BIM Indonesia plays an active role by applying Scan to BIM technology.
Through comprehensive 3D Scanning across the entire Kotabaru area, Geo BIM Indonesia collected point cloud data, later integrated with LiDAR datasets, to create an accurate 3D model of the city. This digital model serves as a foundation for the Master Plan of Kotabaru’s Development, enabling future revitalization efforts without compromising its historical authenticity.
Kotabaru is more than just a remnant of the colonial era, it’s a reflection of Yogyakarta’s evolving urban and cultural identity. With the support of modern technology like Scan to BIM, heritage preservation can now be carried out with greater precision, sustainability, and data-driven accuracy. Through these efforts, Geo BIM Indonesia ensures that the architectural legacy of Kotabaru continues to live on, not only for today’s generation but for those to come.
